What is the lesson this book is trying to teach us?
I believe one of the lessons the book Jennifer Government by Max Barry is trying to teach us that the big business only exists to take all of out hard earned money. Within the first 50 pages of the book, one of the topics of discussion among the characters are the amazingly-expensive-I-would-never-pay-that-much-for-anything shoes, that people are “dieing” to get their hands on; as shown when Haley McDonald's, was shot while getting a pair of her own. The only reason why she was shot and killed was to make the shoes more desirable, showing that big business will do crazy things to get our hard earned money.
Why did Max Barry write Jennifer Government?
Have you ever thought about every aspect of your morning routine; and where everything you use and own came from? If you would just read that little label, you would see that it all most likely came from Asia, where the people that make your $40 sweater are being paid pennies and the corporations paying them is making an unimaginable profit. I think Max Barry wrote this book to show the world, how pathetically reliant we've become on huge corporations. To show us that one day all of this nonsense will take over the world and we'll become like the characters in the book.
Why did Jennifer Government decide to take Haley McDonald's case into her own hands, knowing she wouldn't be paid?
I think Jennifer saw the flaws in society and wanted to show people that this was serious, and crimes can't go unsolved just because people don't have the money.
Should Buy feel guilty for the murder of Hayley McDonald's?
I understand why he feels guilty, because he's the one who gave her the money to buy the shoes in the first place, but I don't think he should. Hayley would have gone to buy those shoes anyway, even if not to buy them herself, she would have gone with her friend. If Hayley McDonald's wasn't there, it would have been just some other teenager waiting to get his or her hands on those shoes, who would have been killed.
